Joseph Stewart was a man who could truly call the gospel “my gospel.” He spent out his life preaching the gospel he loved. He saw a mighty work done, souls saved, and assemblies planted to the glory of God.
This little book was compiled shortly after his homecall by J.R. Daick and William Rodgers. It contains an account of his early days, his conversion and his labours in the gospel. Included are appreciations by James Stewart, Robert McRory, John T. Dickson, S. Wright, H. Bailie, T. Campbell, A. Buick, J. Hamill, Fred Bingham, Wm. Gilmore, Robert Beattie, John Hutchinson, David Craig, S.A. Abernethy, T. Wallace, J.M. Davies, and William Rodgers.

Growing up, I often heard the name of Jospeh Stewart mentioned with great fondness and esteem. He saw God working in the area, particularly in 1905. Some of the older believers used to recall how, when he stayed with them, he often spent the night in prayer. My great-grandfather was saved on “big fair day” 23rd September, 1905, when “Joe” was preaching in the Orange Hall.
We must never forget the work of those who have gone before and, particularly, recall how God worked in those days, as “our father’s have told us.” We trust that the reprint of this little memoir, republished in its original form, will be a blessing to a new generation. The old gospel, the “story of the cross” is still the “power of God unto salvation”.
